University of Chester

The University of Chester has been making history since 1839, when it was founded by such pioneers as the great 19th-century prime ministers, William Gladstone and the Earl of Derby and a former Archbishop of Canterbury.

It is one of the oldest English higher education establishments of any kind, pre-dating all but Oxford, Cambridge, London and Durham, and its original buildings in the Roman city of Chester were the first in the country to be purpose-built for the professional training of teachers. The Dean and Chapter of Chester Cathedral donated land on Parkgate Road for this endeavour. In 1842, Gladstone opened the College’s original buildings for its first intake of 10 male student teachers on the Parkgate Road site, just outside the City Walls, that the University still occupies today, after the College moved from its initial, temporary base in Bridge Street.

Education qualifications remain significant and are now a fraction of the 420 course combinations on offer. In the 20th Century, the institution steadily expanded its student numbers and the variety and nature of its courses, which range from Animation to Zoo Management.

The University of Chester now has 1,880 staff and some 19,850 students, drawn from the United Kingdom, Europe and further afield, particularly the United States, India, China, Nigeria, Turkey, Uganda, Pakistan, Ghana, Bangladesh, Qatar, Indonesia, Vietnam, Japan, Sri Lanka and Malaysia.

University Centre Shrewsbury (UCS) opened in 2014, aiming to provide unprecedented opportunities for students in the local community. It is part of a partnership between The University of Chester and Shropshire Council, who are working in collaboration to deliver an exceptional Higher Education experience in Shrewsbury.

We aim to be different to many other universities in the UK because, working alongside local and national business, courses are taught by high level practicing professionals with a renowned reputation for the quality of their work. This will help students become a different type of graduate; one that is highly employable, highly innovative and enterprising and who has a rounded and valuable student experience.
